Last year, as part of Carol M White PEP grant, Healthy Community Coalition collaborated with the Mt. Blue Regional School District, RSU 58 and Stratton Schools to offer a variety of physical activities for area youth including bowling, ski and snowboard lessons, hiking and mountain biking camps.
Working with our local physical education teachers, HCC offered innovative activities including hula hooping (a great workout!), yoga classes, and kin-ball classes, exposed youth to a variety of physical activities in different settings. PEP also purchased equipment for schools including inline skates, snow shoes and a climbing wall.
PEP also collaborated with community organizations to provide more physical activity opportunities for youth and families. The 2016 Nana Webber Ski program was sponsored through the PEP program, offering free ski equipment and lessons for kids in grades K-12. At Kinneowatha Park in Wilton, free kayak and paddleboard rentals are now available for area youth and available for adults for a small fee.
Through PEP funding HCC hosted the Family Fun in the Sun series throughout Greater Franklin County. The HCC Mobile Health Unit was open for business at the Stratton Family Fun Days, the Farmington Summer Fest, and the Wilton Blueberry Festival, offering lawn games and various opportunities to be active and learn about healthy eating.
The Carol M. White PEP grant is now in its final year. Thanks to the hard work of HCC Staff and School Staff, the programs that were launched during the PEP funding will continue beyond the grant period. Equipment now owned by the schools and towns will be available for years to come for youth and their families.
