New Asperger’s Disorder Support Group

The first meeting of the new Asperger’s Disorder Support Group will take place on Thursday, April 24, from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Walden Room at Franklin Memorial Hospital. The support group is for parents and caregivers of children with Asperger’s Disorder (AD), a developmental disorder.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, AD is an autism spectrum disorder, characterized by impairment in communication skills, as well as repetitive or restrictive patterns of thought and behavior. The most distinguishing symptom of AD is a child’s obsessive interest in a single object or topic to the exclusion of any other.

The support group will bring parents and caregivers together to talk about challenges, resources, and daily practices that can improve a family’s quality of life. Mary Fitzgerald, a parent of a child with AD will facilitate the meeting.

The support group will regularly convene on the third Thursday of each month. No appointment or registration is required and refreshments will be available. For more information, please contact Fitzgerald at 645-3257 or e-mail empym@yahoo.com.
