Q: What is Section 8 rent subsidy and how do I apply?
MaineHousing’s Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program provides rental assistance to income-eligible tenants by subsidizing a portion of their monthly rents and paying it directly to their landlords.The assistance provided is the difference between what the tenant pays toward rent (generally 40% of the household’s adjusted gross income) and the cost of the rent.
This program helps more than 3,800 low-income Maine households each month.
To apply, request an application from the Department of Healty and Human Services, 114 Corn Shop Lane, Farmington, Me. 04938, (207) 778-8400. A program agent from the Maine State House Authority is available on the second Wednesday of each month. Applications are accepted by mail or in person. Forms are also available from the Maine State Housing Authority, 353 Water Street, Augusta, Me. 04330, (207) 626-4600; Toll Free # (800) 452-4668. The current waiting period on accepted applications is six months to one year.
