Services:  The Gold Leaf Institute offers stimulating educational and cultural programs for citizens in the region who are 50 years old or older. It is UMF’s Senior College, affiliated with both Elderhostel and the Maine Senior College Network. Its members create and offer courses, excursions and social events throughout the year that attract participants from Franklin County and beyond.

Services:  This program is designed to help students meet a variety of individual needs. Participants can develop and improve reading and math skills, prepare for the GED exam, and improve study skills. This program is individualized and offered as an open-entry, open-exit class. Tutoring will be by appointment only. The Learning Center located in the School Library will be open Monday through Thursday evenings 6:00 - 9:00 pm by appointment. FREE!

Clients:  Literacy Volunteers provides free reading/writing service to individuals with low level literacy skills. Trained volunteer tutors will work 1:1 in private. Serving Franklin and Somerset Counties and Livermore Falls, Livermore and Jay areas.

Services:  Literacy Volunteer tutors take an 18-hour workshop. They are then matched with a student in their area. This service is free, confidential, and on a one-to-one basis. Tutors and students meet at a place of their choice, either in the student’s home or a local learning center, or library. Literacy Volunteers has teen tutoring programs in schools in both counties. Literacy Volunteers also sends volunteers to different nursing homes in the area to read to the patients.
Fees:  No charge. LVF&SC is funded by Tri-Valley and Mid-Maine United Ways, grants and donations.
Hours:  LVA F&SC is located at the Adult Basic Education office in Farmington and their office hours are Mon. through Thurs. - 8:30 to 4:00, Fri.- 8:30 to 1. However much of the work is done by appointment.

Parents as Scholars

Services:  The Parents as Scholars program is an assistance program for parents who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and would like to get a post secondary degree in a two or four year program. If you are on TANF and have a child or children than you qualify for this program. If you are not getting TANF benefits now, you will need to: Apply for TANF: If you are not currently on TANF right now, you must apply for TANF benefits at a local DHHS office. The TANF application is the same application that is used for the PaS program. Orientation meeting: While your TANF eligibility is being determined, you will be required to attend a group orientation meeting. At the meeting you should be told about the PaS program, as well as other options available in the TANF program. Meet with the case manager: Next you will meet with your case manager. Tell the case manager that you would like to join the PaS program. Ask for the PaS application form, fill it out and give it back to your case manager. Written decision: You should get a written decision, within 30 days of your request telling you whether or not you will be admitted to the PaS program. If you are receiving TANF benefits now, you will need to: Apply for PaS at any time: You can apply for the PaS program at any time. Ask your case manager for an application. Complete the form and return it to your case manager. (Be prepared to show that you meet the six eligibility requirements) Written decision: You should get a written decision on from the form within 30 days. What are the six eligibility requirements? You are eligible for TANF You are enrolled in a two or four year post secondary degree program You do not already have a bachelor’s degree in a field where there is work available for you You do not have the skills to earn at least 85% of Maine’s median wage ($41,985 for a family of three) The degree that you will be receiving will improve your ability to support your family You have the aptitude to complete the educational program that you have chosen How will I know if my educational program and support services have been approved? Meet with your case manager.
