| Services: | Upcountry Arists, a non-profit organization, was formed in 1986 to encourage, support, educate artists, and develop public awareness of the arts in Western Maine. Our members represent a variety of artistic media.
The organization holds quarterly meetings at which various programs such as marketing the arts, panel discussions, art critiques and workshops are held. Our members are kept informed of current shows, gallery openings and other art related opportunities through monthly newsletters. Upcountry Artists manages the annual H. K. Smith Scholorship. This is awarded to an aspiring artist from the area high school graduating classes. Applicants must present a portfolio of their artwork, a written statement of what art means to them, and proof of acceptance at a college/school of art, as well as a recommendation from their art teacher. The applications are then juried by no less than three of the organizations artists. The Organization sponsors the annual Sugarloaf Art and Craft Show at the Base Lodge at Sugarloaf Mountain USA over Homecoming/Columbus Day weekend. Since the summer of 1993, we have sponsored an "Art Escape/Retreat" in Lubec, Maine during the first two weeks of August. This was originally conceived to give artists a chance to immerse themselves totally in art. Participants in this program have found this experience very productive and inspiring. Please feel welcome to join us as a member, in fostering the arts here in the upcountry. Membership application forms can be downloaded from our website. |
